Pre-Extraction Care and Items to Bring

Pre-Extraction Care:

  1. Consult Your Dentist: It’s important to discuss your medical history, any allergies, and current      medications with your dentist before the procedure, especially if you have conditions like heart disease, diabetes, bleeding disorders, or are taking blood thinners.

  2. Health Check: Make sure you don’t have a cold, fever, or other infections. If you are unwell, the      extraction may be postponed.

  3. Fasting: If the extraction requires anesthesia (especially general anesthesia), you will likely need to fast for 6-8 hours before the procedure to reduce the risk of complications.

  4. Stop Certain  Medications: If you are on blood thinners (like aspirin), your dentist may advise      stopping them a few days before the extraction.

  5. Wear Comfortable Clothing:  Choose loose and comfortable clothes, as you may need to lie back during      the procedure.

  6. Bring Necessary Documents:  Remember to bring your ID, health insurance card, and any other relevant      documents for your visit.

Items to Bring:

  • ID and health insurance card (if applicable)

  • Insurance card (if applicable)

  • Comfortable clothing

  • A companion, especially if you’re undergoing general anesthesia or anticipate feeling unwell post-extraction

Post-Extraction Care

Post-Extraction Care:

  1. Keep Your Mouth Clean: Avoid brushing your teeth, rinsing your mouth, or sucking on anything during the first 24 hours, as this can dislodge the blood clot and cause bleeding.

  2. Avoid Intense Physical Activity: Refrain from strenuous exercise for at least 48 hours after the extraction      to prevent increased blood pressure and bleeding.

  3. Ice Packs: Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face near the extraction site for 15-20 minutes at a time, with 30-minute intervals, for the first 24 hours to help reduce swelling.

  4. Eat Soft Foods: Stick to soft or liquid foods for the first few days. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that may irritate the wound.

  5. Avoid Smoking and Drinking Alcohol: Smoking and drinking alcohol can delay healing and increase the risk of infection, so it’s best to avoid them.

  6. Rest: Ensure you get plenty of rest in the days following the extraction to promote healing.

  7. Pain Relief: If prescribed, take pain medication as directed by your dentist to manage discomfort.

  8. Avoid Forceful Spitting or Rinsing: This can disturb the blood clot and increase bleeding.

  9. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any follow-up appointments recommended by your dentist to ensure      proper healing.

If you experience severe pain, abnormal bleeding, or other concerning symptoms after the extraction, contact your dentist immediately.
